Olin Powder Farm Environmental Management Internship

Start Date: 1 June 2022

End Date: 31 Aug 2022

Dates somewhat negotiable.  Summer stipend up to $7,000 depending on period of employment

Save the Sound seeks a summer intern to help evaluate existing information and data concerning management of the Olin Powder Farm property (Hamden) as a park.  The 102-acre property is environmentally very diverse and includes ponds, wetlands, and upland areas adjacent to the Farmington Canal Greenway, and it is surrounded by neighborhoods including some that are under-resourced.  Historically it was owned by the Winchester corporation and subsections were contaminated.  The intern would evaluate existing management plan documents and retrieve other data collected by Connecticut DEEP staff, but only available as paper copies at their Hartford Offices.  The goal is to provide the basis for finalizing action by Olin under an existing consent decree to remediate the site consistent with use by the public.

Key Information

The intern should have broad knowledge of topics like ecology, plants, wildlife, soils, pollution, and aquatic systems. This position, supported by the Yale Center for Environmental Justice, offers an opportunity to work with a local coalition and contribute to advancing their goals for environmental justice.   The intern would report to Prof. Gaboury Benoit and staff of Save the Sound.

How to Apply

Interested students should send their resume (no longer than 2 pages) and a cover letter to Prof. Gaboury Benoit at gabouryb@gmail.com.
